Word formation: Prefix and Suffix

Now in this chapter, we shall learn how to create new words with prefixes and suffixes.

Prefix:

If a part of the word is added at the beginning of the base word to create a new meaning it is called a prefix.

Example:

The word ‘dishonest’ consists of the prefix ‘dis’ (that means not) combined with the main/base word ‘honest’. The meaning of the word ‘dishonest’ is not honest.

Then we knew that-

  •  prefix sits before a word.
  • Parts of speech can be changed when prefixes add.

Suffix:

If a part of the word is added at the end of the base word to create a new meaning it is called a suffix.

Example:

  • If we add the suffix ‘-or’ to the main word, create, the new word is creator.
  • If we add the suffix’ -ess‘ to the main word, poet, the new word is poetess.

Then we knew that-

  • Suffix safe after a word.
  • Adding suffixes change the meaning of the word.
  • Parts of speech can be changed when suffixes add.
